Scapa is an Orkney single malt distillery overlooking Scapa Flow, just outside Kirkwall. Founded in 1885, it is one of Scotland’s northernmost distilleries and sits close to the meeting point of the North Sea and the Atlantic, giving the whisky a strong island identity without relying on heavy peat.
Today Scapa is owned by Chivas Brothers, part of Pernod Ricard. The distillery has had periods of quiet operation and refurbishment, but now has a clearer single malt presence, with a refreshed range including age-stated expressions such as the 10, 16 and 21 Year Old. Scapa is generally made with unpeated malt and matured with a strong emphasis on first-fill American oak.
The house style is smooth, honeyed and fruit-led, with notes of vanilla, pear, citrus, tropical fruit, cream, soft spice and gentle oak. Its island setting can bring a subtle freshness, but the whisky is typically more rounded and approachable than smoky or maritime in the obvious sense.
Scapa offers a different view of Orkney whisky from the more heavily peated image often associated with the islands. It is coastal in setting but gentle in character, making it an elegant choice for drinkers who enjoy soft fruit, sweetness and a quietly distinctive northern provenance.
