Nikka Whisky is one of the foundational names in Japanese whisky, built on Masataka Taketsuru’s ambition to create whisky in Japan with genuine technical and stylistic depth. The company’s first distillery, Yoichi in Hokkaido, was established in 1934, and its second, Miyagikyo near Sendai, followed in 1969, giving Nikka two markedly different malt distilleries at the heart of its range.

That dual-distillery structure remains central to Nikka’s identity. Yoichi is known for a firmer, more muscular style, while Miyagikyo brings a softer, more fragrant and elegant character. Alongside its single malts, Nikka also produces grain whisky and uses that breadth to strong effect across blends and pure malts such as Taketsuru and From the Barrel, helping make the house one of the most distinctive and complete whisky-makers in Japan.

What makes Nikka especially compelling is the balance it strikes between heritage and range. It is a historic producer with deep roots in the development of Japanese whisky, but also a brand whose modern line-up still feels varied, characterful and clearly shaped by place, production style and blending skill.
