Cragganmore is a Speyside single malt distillery at Ballindalloch, close to the River Spey. Founded in 1869 by John Smith, an experienced distiller with links to both The Macallan and The Glenlivet, it was deliberately sited near the railway and the river, giving it strong practical advantages as well as a classic Speyside setting.
Today Cragganmore is owned by Diageo and remains best known as the Speyside representative within the Classic Malts collection. The 12 Year Old is its key official expression, supported at times by Distillers Edition releases, limited bottlings and older special editions, while independent bottlings also appear from time to time.
The whisky is often described as one of Speyside’s more complex styles, helped by the distillery’s unusual still shapes and relatively characterful spirit. Typical notes include honey, malt, orchard fruit, gentle smoke, herbs, vanilla, toasted oak and soft spice, with richer bottlings adding dried fruit, toffee and a more rounded sherry-cask depth.
Cragganmore stands apart from the lighter, simpler image sometimes attached to Speyside whisky. It remains elegant and approachable, but there is a layered, slightly old-fashioned quality to its best bottlings that makes it especially rewarding for drinkers who enjoy subtle complexity over obvious power.
