Port Charlotte is the heavily peated single malt made at Bruichladdich Distillery on Islay. The name comes from the nearby village of Port Charlotte, where a nineteenth-century distillery once operated, and today it represents Bruichladdich’s more robust, smoky style alongside the distillery’s unpeated Bruichladdich releases and its intensely peated Octomore whiskies.
Bruichladdich is owned by Rémy Cointreau, and Port Charlotte sits as one of the distillery’s three principal whisky identities. First introduced in the 2000s and later given a permanent core expression with Port Charlotte 10 Year Old, the range has grown to include annual, cask-led and age-stated releases, often highlighting Islay maturation, wine casks and the distillery’s interest in provenance.
The style is smoky, coastal and full-flavoured, but usually less extreme than Octomore. Expect peat smoke, sea spray, citrus peel, malt, charred oak and pepper, with richer expressions adding dark fruit, chocolate, leather, tobacco and spice. Port Charlotte 10 Year Old remains the key reference point: a heavily peated Islay malt with enough structure for peat lovers, but also enough balance and texture to show Bruichladdich’s distilling character beneath the smoke.
