Macduff is a Highland single malt distillery in Aberdeenshire, close to the fishing town of Macduff and the mouth of the River Deveron. Founded in the early 1960s, it is a comparatively modern Scotch distillery, built with a practical, functional design and developed largely to provide malt whisky for blending.

Today Macduff is owned by Bacardi through John Dewar & Sons. Much of its production supports blended Scotch, including William Lawson’s and other Dewar’s-related whisky interests, while official single malt releases are generally sold under The Deveron name, previously seen as Glen Deveron. Independent bottlers, by contrast, often use the Macduff distillery name.

The whisky is usually approachable, rounded and gently coastal, with notes of baked apple, vanilla, honey, citrus, soft malt and light spice. Older or richer cask-influenced bottlings can bring more toffee, dried fruit, polished oak and subtle maritime depth, while retaining a smooth Highland character.

Macduff is interesting partly because its identity is split between distillery and brand. On one hand, it remains a hardworking malt producer for blends; on the other, The Deveron and independent Macduff bottlings show a quietly attractive Highland whisky with more personality than its low public profile might suggest.
