Knockando is a Speyside single malt distillery in the village of the same name, close to the River Spey. Founded in 1898 by John Tytler Thomson, it belongs to the late-Victorian wave of Scotch whisky building, created at a time when demand for malt whisky to support blends was rising strongly.
Today Knockando is owned by Diageo and remains closely associated with J&B, for which it has long been an important malt component. As a single malt, it has a particular following in parts of continental Europe, and its official bottlings are unusual for often carrying both distillation and bottling years, emphasising vintage and season rather than simply a fixed age statement.
The whisky is typically light, smooth and fruit-led, with notes of apple, pear, honey, malt, vanilla, almond and gentle spice. Older expressions, including 18 Year Old and 21 Year Old Master Reserve releases, bring more dried fruit, soft oak, nutty depth and polished sweetness while retaining the distillery’s restrained Speyside character.
Knockando is a subtle whisky rather than a dramatic one. Its charm is in balance, softness and quiet consistency: a classic blender’s malt that also works well as an approachable single malt for drinkers who enjoy gentle Speyside fruit and understated maturity.
