Inchgower is a Speyside single malt distillery just outside Buckie, close to the Moray coast. Founded in 1871 by Alexander Wilson, it was built using equipment from the earlier Tochineal distillery and has long occupied an interesting position between Speyside elegance and a more coastal, slightly austere character.
Today Inchgower is owned by Diageo and remains primarily a blending malt, with much of its output used in Scotch blends rather than promoted as a major standalone single malt. Its best-known official release is the 14 Year Old in Diageo’s Flora & Fauna series, while independent bottlings have given enthusiasts a broader view of the distillery across different ages, cask types and strengths.
The whisky is often described as firm, waxy and lightly maritime, with notes of malt, citrus peel, green apple, herbs, spice and a dry, faintly salty edge. Older or sherry-matured bottlings can add richer layers of dried fruit, nuts, polished oak and savoury depth, while still retaining the structured, slightly muscular feel that distinguishes Inchgower from softer Speyside malts.
Inchgower rewards drinkers who enjoy character over obvious sweetness. It is not one of the region’s most visible names, but its best bottlings show a distinctive side of Speyside: coastal, textured, quietly complex and well worth seeking out beyond its role in blends.
