Glen Elgin is a Speyside single malt distillery at Fogwatt, near Elgin in Moray. Founded in 1898 and designed by Charles Doig, it arrived at the end of the great Victorian whisky boom, just before the industry entered a more difficult period. Despite that uncertain start, it became a valued producer with a strong reputation among blenders.
Today Glen Elgin is owned by Diageo and remains an active distillery, with much of its output used in blended Scotch, particularly White Horse. As a single malt it has a relatively modest official presence, led by the 12 Year Old expression, while independent bottlings have helped enthusiasts explore the spirit across a wider range of ages, casks and strengths.
The whisky is typically fruity, rounded and gently textured, with notes of honey, orange peel, orchard fruit, malt, soft spice and light oak. Its use of worm tub condensers helps give the spirit a fuller, slightly weightier feel than some lighter Speyside malts, adding body and depth without overwhelming its natural fruitiness.
Glen Elgin is a quietly characterful Speyside whisky: familiar to blenders, less obvious to casual single malt drinkers, but capable of real charm when bottled on its own. Its best expressions show a pleasing mix of fruit, weight and old-school distillery character.
