Ballechin Whisky

Ballechin is the heavily peated single malt produced at Edradour Distillery in Highland Perthshire. The name comes from a now-lost farm distillery that once operated nearby, but the modern whisky is very much part of Edradour’s contemporary story, created to show a smokier, more muscular side of this small traditional distillery.

Edradour is owned by Signatory Vintage, under Andrew Symington, and Ballechin has become an important counterpart to the distillery’s unpeated house style. First produced in the early 2000s, it is now led by Ballechin 10 Year Old, supported by cask-strength releases, single casks and a wide range of cask maturations and finishes.

The whisky is typically robust, smoky and full-bodied, with notes of peat smoke, malt, dark fruit, pepper, charred oak and earthy spice. Sherry, wine and other cask types can add richer layers of chocolate, dried fruit, leather and tobacco, while bourbon casks tend to show more citrus, vanilla and direct peat character.

Ballechin gives Edradour a very different voice from its more familiar unpeated malt. It has the weight and texture of the distillery’s traditional spirit, but with a bold peated edge that makes it especially rewarding for drinkers who enjoy smoky Highland whisky with depth and individuality.
