Strathclyde is a Lowland grain whisky distillery in Glasgow, founded in 1927 by Seager Evans & Co. Located in the Gorbals, on the south side of the River Clyde, it represents a more industrial side of Scotch whisky: large-scale, urban and focused on the grain spirit that gives many blended whiskies their structure and balance.
Today Strathclyde is operated by Chivas Brothers, part of Pernod Ricard, and remains one of Scotland’s key grain whisky production sites. Since the closure of Port Dundas, it has also been notable as Glasgow’s last active grain whisky distillery. Its output is used primarily for blending, rather than for an official single grain range under the distillery name.
Strathclyde is usually encountered through independent bottlings, often released at considerable age. These single grain whiskies can show classic mature grain notes of vanilla, coconut, toffee, cereal sweetness, light citrus, soft spice and polished oak, with older casks developing richer flavours of caramel, dried fruit, wax and gentle wood tannin.
Strathclyde offers a useful reminder that Scotch whisky is not built on single malt alone. Behind many famous blends sits grain whisky of real importance, and when mature Strathclyde is bottled on its own, it can be elegant, sweetly rounded and quietly complex.
