Mars is a Japanese whisky brand from Hombo Shuzo, a long-established drinks producer founded in Kagoshima in 1872. The company obtained its whisky licence in 1949, with important early influence from Kiichiro Iwai, a significant figure in the development of Japanese whisky and the inspiration behind several Mars bottlings.
Today, Mars whisky is centred on two Japanese distilleries: Komagatake in Nagano, set high in the Central Alps, and Tsunuki in Kagoshima, the company’s historic home in southern Japan. The contrast between these sites is central to the brand’s identity, with alpine conditions shaping a cleaner, more elegant style at Komagatake and the warmer southern climate contributing greater richness and weight at Tsunuki.
The range includes single malts under the Komagatake and Tsunuki names, alongside blended whiskies such as Iwai, Iwai Tradition and Mars Maltage expressions. Some bottlings are fully Japanese whisky under current industry standards, while others have historically incorporated imported malt, so the precise labelling and composition are worth noting from bottle to bottle.
Mars is one of the more distinctive names in Japanese whisky, less globally dominant than Suntory or Nikka but highly respected among enthusiasts. Its character comes from regional contrast, careful maturation and a willingness to show different facets of Japanese whisky rather than a single fixed house style.
