Glentauchers is a Speyside single malt distillery at Mulben, near Keith, founded in 1897 by James Buchanan and W. P. Lowrie. From the outset it was closely connected with blending, created to supply malt whisky for Buchanan’s blends at a time when Scotch was expanding rapidly in both domestic and export markets.
Today Glentauchers is owned by Chivas Brothers, part of Pernod Ricard, and remains an important component in Ballantine’s. Although active and substantial in scale, it has only a limited official single malt presence, with much of its reputation among enthusiasts built through independent bottlings from companies such as Gordon & MacPhail, Signatory, Douglas Laing and others.
The distillery’s style is generally light, fruity and aromatic, shaped by long fermentation and slow distillation. Typical notes include pear, apple, citrus, vanilla, honey, soft malt and gentle floral spice, with older or richer cask-influenced bottlings adding creamier texture, orchard fruit, toffee and polished oak.
Glentauchers sits in the category of Speyside malts that blenders have long valued more visibly than consumers. That relative obscurity is part of its charm: when bottled well, it offers a graceful, quietly expressive single malt that shows why some of Scotland’s less famous distilleries are so highly prized behind the scenes.
