Glen Mhor Whisky

Glen Mhor was a Highland single malt distillery in Inverness, founded in 1892 by John Birnie and Charles Mackinlay. Built close to the Caledonian Canal and the railway, it formed part of a small but once-important cluster of Inverness distilleries, alongside neighbouring Glen Albyn.

The distillery eventually became part of the Distillers Company Limited and later passed into the portfolio now associated with Diageo. Glen Mhor closed in 1983 during the wider downturn that claimed many Scotch whisky distilleries, and the site was demolished in 1986, leaving no prospect of revival in its original form.

Surviving Glen Mhor bottlings are now drawn from finite stocks, with official releases and independent bottlings providing the main record of the distillery’s character. Mature examples can show a distinctive Highland profile of malt, honey, citrus, wax, orchard fruit, gentle spice and polished oak, with older casks sometimes developing deeper notes of dried fruit, tobacco, leather and soft tropical fruit.

Glen Mhor is now remembered as one of the lost Inverness malts, a distillery whose reputation has grown as its remaining bottles have become scarcer. Its best releases offer more than rarity alone: they preserve a style of Highland whisky from a distilling landscape that has largely disappeared.
