Brugal is one of the great names of Dominican rum, founded in Puerto Plata in 1888 by Andrés Brugal. The brand remains closely associated with the Dominican Republic, where it is a market leader, and with a house style traditionally described as lighter, cleaner and drier than many richer, heavier Caribbean rums.

Today Brugal is part of Edrington, the Scottish spirits group also associated with The Macallan and Highland Park. Production remains rooted in the Dominican Republic, with Brugal’s ageing and blending expertise carried forward through generations of maestros roneros. The range includes accessible expressions such as Añejo and Extra Viejo, alongside more premium bottlings including XV, 1888, Leyenda and limited-edition releases.

The style is generally smooth, dry and oak-led, with notes of vanilla, caramel, orange peel, toasted sugar, light spice and polished wood. Brugal 1888, one of the brand’s key premium expressions, is double aged in American oak and sherry-seasoned casks, adding richer layers of dried fruit, cocoa, spice and soft sweetness while retaining the brand’s relatively clean Dominican profile.

Brugal offers a polished route into Dominican rum: elegant, versatile and less overtly sugary than many modern sipping styles. Its best bottlings combine Caribbean warmth with a restrained, cask-led character that works well in both simple mixed drinks and more contemplative serves.
